If you’ve been using computers on the internet for a while, you’ve probably heard mention of an IP address at some point, but what is it?

Telephone Numbers

The internet is a massive collection of computers, all interconnected via a multitude of different computer networks, hence its name, internet, derived from inter-network. In many ways the internet is like the existing telephone network, where individual telephones are interconnected worldwide between countries individual telephone systems.

For the global telephone system to work, every telephone in the world must have a completely unique telephone number. Such a number is made up from three different groups, your local number, your area code and your international country code. Using this system you can dial direct to any telephone in the world if you know its number.

What is RSS?

So you keep seeing this funny little orange button dotted around websites together with phrases like “RSS” and “Feed”, but haven’t got a clue what it’s all about. Well fear no more, help is on hand…

Information Overload

Since its creation, the internet has expanded at an alarming rate, providing masses of information on any subject imaginable. There is now so much information available that it is difficult to collate and digest everything that you would like to. This is where a new internet technology (or more precisely a new implementation of an existing technology), RSS or Really Simple Syndication, has evolved to make this process a little more manageable.

You probably have a collection of favourite websites that you frequently like to visit, keeping up to date with the latest news. RSS can automate this for you, by constantly monitoring your favourite websites and notifying you whenever a new article is available. You will get your latest news, direct to your desktop, as soon as it’s available, instead of having to continuously trawl through a list of websites. RSS is a bit like an electronic paperboy, automatically delivering news to your computer.

To Blog, or Not to Blog?

William ShakespeareTo blog, or not to blog, that is the question“, or that was the question, and one that I’ve now clearly answered after much deliberation, but How and Why?

How?

This was the easy one. After a general trawl around the web and much Stumbling, it became plainly apparent that the blogging platform of choice was WordPress.

I already had my own domain (www.richardfarrar.com), which I’d had for quite a while, however this was presently being hosted on a Windows server running ASP scripting (WordPress requires PHP scripting and a MySQL database). So…
